Week 9 — Play & Reflect: Number Portraits

This month’s focus is Number Portraits, a creative activity that blends number sense with project-based learning.

A Number Portrait is a visual representation of a number built using Tile Farm Studio. An example of a Number Portrait where students represented the number ten in six diverse ways is shown above.

Number Portraits invite students to think flexibly about numbers while expressing their ideas creatively. They work beautifully across K–12 classrooms and can be applied to nearly any mathematical topic.

Play & Reflect: Try It Yourself

Before bringing Number Portraits to your students, we invite you to experience the activity yourself.

Your task:

Create a Number Portrait of the number 42 in Tile Farm Studio.

There’s no single correct way to represent the number. The goal is to explore different ways numbers can be structured and visualized.
