Week 2 — Take It to Class: How Many

This week’s Take It to Class builds on last week’s Play & Reflect by bringing How Many into your classroom and observing how students engage with it together.

How Many is a simple yet powerful number sense routine that places curiosity at the center of learning. Instead of starting with an answer to find, students begin by noticing, wondering, and generating their own mathematical questions.

The routine lives in Tile Talk, Tile Farm’s free math talk resource, and does not require student logins:

There are five levels of How Many, which can support a wide range of learners and open up opportunities for differentiation. This week, your goal isn’t to get through every level or land on correct answers—it’s to observe how question asking changes the tone and dynamics of mathematical thinking in your room.

Take It to Class

Try How Many with your students either as an entire class or in small group discussions. Choose a level that feels interesting for your class (or explore multiple levels). Let students generate questions freely. Answering questions is optional—the focus is on noticing and curiosity.
