Tile Talk: A Free, High-Impact Resource for Joyful Math PD

Some of the most powerful professional learning doesn’t come from lengthy presentations or complex frameworks, it comes from interactive experiences full of genuine mathematical curiosity.

Tile Talk was originally designed as a student-facing math discussion resource: low-floor, high-ceiling activities built around visual representations, open-ended prompts, and multiple strategies. What we didn’t fully anticipate was how quickly it would be embraced by professional development providers.

When we debuted Tile Talk at NCTM Atlanta 2025, dozens of instructional coaches, district leaders, state-level math specialists, and private consultants immediately began asking how they could use it in their own professional learning sessions with teachers.

Why Tile Talk works so well for professional learning

Tile Talk centers around beautiful tiling patterns and visual representations of numbers, which naturally invite multiple interpretations and strategies.
