Week 1 — Play & Reflect #1: How Many

How comfortable do you and your students feel asking questions?

Creating a classroom culture where students confidently ask questions is one of the most powerful things you can do as a teacher. It not only accelerates learning, but helps students build confidence as thinkers far beyond your classroom walls.

How Many is a simple number sense routine that places question asking at the center of the learning experience. Rather than focusing on answers first, students practice noticing, wondering, and generating their own mathematical questions.

In How Many, the task is intentionally simple: You’re shown a visually compelling geometric pattern, and your goal is to ask as many meaningful “how many” questions as you can. Answering the questions is optional—the focus is on curiosity, not correctness.

Daily How Many prompts can be found in Tile Talk, Tile Farm’s free math talk resource.

Before trying this activity with your students, we invite you to experience it yourself and reflect on your own comfort with asking questions.

Submit your reflections by January 14 for a chance to win a gift card to the Tile Farm marketplace.
