Some of the most powerful professional learning doesn’t come from lengthy presentations or complex frameworks, it comes from interactive experiences full of genuine mathematical curiosity.
Tile Talk was originally designed as a student-facing math discussion resource: low-floor, high-ceiling activities built around visual representations, open-ended prompts, and multiple strategies. What we didn’t fully anticipate was how quickly it would be embraced by professional development providers.
When we debuted Tile Talk at NCTM Atlanta 2025, dozens of instructional coaches, district leaders, state-level math specialists, and private consultants immediately began asking how they could use it in their own professional learning sessions with teachers.
Why Tile Talk works so well for professional learning
Tile Talk centers around beautiful tiling patterns and visual representations of numbers, which naturally invite multiple interpretations and strategies. This leads to rich discourse, thoughtful questioning, and productive disagreement, exactly the kinds of experiences we want teachers to facilitate with students.
In PD settings, Tile Talk:
- Creates low-pressure entry points that feel accessible to all teachers
- Encourages open-ended discussion around strategy, reasoning, and representation
- Models effective math questioning, with a strong emphasis on inquiry rather than answers
- Supports joyful, social mathematical experiences that help teachers feel confident and capable
Just as importantly, the activities are genuinely fun. Teachers engage as learners, rediscovering curiosity and play, and then can turn right around and use the same experiences with their students the very next day.
Tile Talk requires no complex setup, no specialized materials, and no lengthy training. The instructions are simple, flexible, and easy to integrate into existing PD structures, whether in a workshop, coaching cycle, PLC, or district-wide professional learning session.
