Building Number Sense with Engineer It

When we think of math’s greatest powers, one stands out: its ability to help us build. From baking cookies to painting a mural to designing a rocket ship, math allows us to take what we’ve learned and apply it creatively to make useful, beautiful things.

Unfortunately, in most classrooms, students rarely get to experience the joy of using the math they are learning to build or creatively express themselves.

Introducing Engineer It

At the heart of Daily Digits—Tile Farm’s fluency and number sense routine—is a new kind of puzzle called Engineer It. These puzzles train students to think like engineers, using specific ingredients (tiles) to build something with a set of constraints.

Engineer It puzzles are simple to learn, but incredibly rich. They deepen math fluency by asking students to apply what they know in flexible, creative ways. They’re a refreshing alternative to traditional word problems—which can often feel messy or inaccessible—while getting students engaged in problem solving at a deeper level.

The puzzles span a wide range of content: from early counting to addition and multiplication facts, all the way up to order of operations and positive and negative numbers.

In this solved Engineer It puzzle, students combine their knowledge of addition, multiplication, and symmetry to build a symmetric representation of (1+2+3)*4 =24.

A Bigger Creative World

As students progress through Daily Digits and tackle increasingly complex Engineer It puzzles, they’re also learning the core mechanics shared with Tile Farm Studio—our open-ended space for mathematical creation and art-making.

Each day, when students complete Daily Digits, they unlock Tile Farm Studio, where they can use the same building blocks from Engineer It to design things that are personally meaningful—like a logo for their soccer team, a favorite cartoon character turned into pixel art, their state’s flag made from geometric tiles, or a secret cryptographic code to send a message to their best friend.

What they’re really doing is applying mathematical ideas—like number sense, symmetry, spatial reasoning, and proportional thinking—in a way that’s expressive and fun.

In this Tile Farm Studio canvas created by a student at Georgia O’Keeffe elementary school in  Albuquerque, NM, the student used their knowledge of multiplication to build a 25×25 array, then used that as a canvas to make a pixel art version of their favorite cartoon character.

Deep Comprehension Meets Creativity

The synergy between Engineer It and Tile Farm Studio creates a learning experience like no other—building number sense through thoughtful challenge, then opening a space for students to express their understanding in creative, visual ways.

But most importantly, it makes math learning fun and beautiful.
